What is Flickr?
Flickr is an excellent online photo management tool. Flickr is very user-friendly and includes many fun features: you can pick your favorite photos, add comments to interesting photos, map where the photo was taken anywhere in the world, and browse wonderful and memorable photographs from all over the world. Our Flickr group will increase the visibility and recognition of the national and global youth service movement. You can also display photos from Flickr on your website, blog, discuss photos on Flickr, and get photos printed from the site.

I’m convinced already. How do I get started with Flickr; how do I sign up?
If you already have an email account with Yahoo!, it is easy to sign up. Just visit www.flickr.com and follow the instructions there. If you do not have a Yahoo! ID, you will be directed to sign up for one at www.flickr.com.

I’m signed up with Flickr, how do I access the GYSD group and add my photos to that group?

Access our N & GYSD 2006 group here at http://www.flickr.com/groups/ngysd2006/ Or search for “n&gysd” under the Groups section (Please do not put any spaces in “n&gysd”). Then click "Join This Group" so that the list administrators can add you to the group.

Step 2 - Upload and Tag your Photos
Upload your photos to Flickr - you can use their website (http://flickr.com/photos/upload/), the "Uploadr" software tool (You have to install it from http://flickr.com/tools/). <!--or use the interactive "Web 2.0" features built right in to the new web browser, "Flock" (install this from http://www.flock.com/).-->

How do I describe my photo?
Photos must be public (so other people can see them!) and tagged with GYSD.
On Flickr, users can search group photos using “tags.” For example, if a member of the group would like to see what GYSD looks like in Wyoming this year, the member can search by the tags “wyoming” and “gysd2009.” Please note that you should avoid putting spaces in your tags, so that "RiodeJaneiro" becomes the tag for a place with two words— Rio de Janeiro. The following tags are required for your photos to be included in our Flickr group:
- gysd2009
- GYSD
- volunteer
- If in the US, your city, state (e.g. california, ohio, northcarolina) and zip code (e.g. 20005)
- If outside the US, your city and country (e.g. accra, ghana)
- If a grantee, the grant program (StateFarm, Disney, UnitedHealthHEROES, etc.)
Optional tags (to further describe your picture):
Youth, adult, group, individual, literacy, environment, cleanup, your city, leadagency, nationalpartner, outdoor, indoor, media, officials, intergenerational, trees, garden, statefarm, disney, urban, rural, ...

What makes a good Flickr photo for GYSD?
Choose and upload only your best pictures. Some of the best photos:
- Remember to include a caption with each photo, identifying the main figures from left to right and describing the action, e.g. Ian G. and Julie M. fill backpacks with school supplies to donate to Bates Elementary School in Mississippi.
- Are clear, in-focus, and properly lit
- Are close-ups of faces and smiles
- Contain event or program-related caps and shirts
- Show the “before” and “after” of your service projects
- Get down to the level of the action rather than shot from above
- If you have a free account, remember that Flickr limits your monthly upload by file size, so you can email high-resolution photos to info at gysd.org, and reduce the size of your picture to upload them to flickr.
For our media campaign, Youth Service America needs photos that reflect the diversity of the service movement. Examples include:
- Elected officials engaged in service with youth
- Members of the media engaged in service with youth
- Community leaders engaged in service with youth
- Youth with disabilities engaged in service with non-disabled youth
- Older youth serving younger youth, or youth of different ages serving together
Respect the rights and feelings of others—get permission from everyone photographed (there are photo releases in the GYSD planning materials)!
