Healthy Girls

Hello to everyone!

My name is Elina and I am 8th grade students at Bokonbaev School. I live in Bazar- Korgon, Kyrgyzstan. I organized project “Healthy girls” for GYSD at my school on April 23. My friends Janylai, Shahida, Aijan, Jainagul, Maftuna, Muhayo and Sevara helped me teaching. We taught girls about HIV/ AIDS, TB, Rabies and Meningitis. First, I was very scary, because I thought elementary grades don’t listen to me. But they were listening to me. I was very happy. I gave information about how prevent illness, signs and causes of HIV/ AIDS. After one day they said thanks for me and said “Its good idea to teach us about health, because we don’t have information about illnesses

Communities In Schools/XY-Zone Project on Disaster/Emergency Prepardness

14 middle school boys who are participants in Communities In Schools' XY-Zone group chose disaster and emergency preparedness as the fullfillment of their "Reaching Out" project. These boys were in the 1st and 2nd grade when they were forced to evacuate New Orleans because of Katrina. They remember the chaos for them, their families and neighbors. As we began to plan the project, the boys were keenly aware of the tragedies for the families in Haiti and Chile. In addition, early predictions for hurricane season were beginning to show up in the media. So, they decided they wanted to be sure that members of the community would have some tools to help them prepare for emergencies. We looked for activities that were happening during GYSD week, and found that the Young Leadership Council, a group of 1200 professionals, were featuring nonprofit groups at their spring concert series at Lafayette Square in the heart of New Orleans. These concerts are free to the public so they are usually crowded. The boys planned out what they wanted to focus on how they would communicate the information to concert attendees. They decided to focus on making sure everyone knew the emergency numbers to call both before and after an emergency happens. In New Orleans, you have to be sure you find out about the status of the roads because there aren't many ways to get out of the city. So, they had t-shirts made with the phone numbers on the back and wore the shirts to attract attention. They gave away flashlight keychains (because the power was out for a LONG time after Katrina) and they gave out refrigerator magnets with the numbers. More than 200 people stopped by the tent and listened to the boys give advice to be prepared!

Hope for Haiti

The 6-8 grade students at Merrill Middle School will be packaging food with Kids Against Hunger on Friday, April 23rd. Each package we put together will provide 6 nutritionally complete meals that will go to those in need. Currently, 90% of the food is being sent to Haiti for earthquake relief. Each meal costs Kids Against Hunger $.25, so the students at Merrill have been working hard to raise money that will cover the costs of food and transportation of the packages to where they need to go. We had a spirit week, where students could pay a dollar each day to participate in events, a student vs. staff basketball game, a pancake dinner, and a dance, just to name a few. We also had great support from our community members, and we were able to raise the $5,000 needed for Kids Against Hunger to bring the mobile packaging unit to Merrill for the entire student body to package food. For more information on the packaging event and Kids Against Hunger, go to http://www.outreachafrica.org/food.php.

REHABILITATION OF RIVER BANKS IN RIVER NYANDO AND AWACH OF NYANZA IN WESTERN KENYA

Uhai Lake Forum, a registered NGO founded in 1999 addresses the issues of resource and environmental conservation in Lake Victoria region. It uses the forums approach in promoting the participation of community in natural resource governance and conservation. Thus, it has instituted an annual commemorative advocacy forum known as Lake Victoria Day which acts as a platform for awareness creation, information dissemination, advocacy, lobbying and capacity building of the local communities to shoulder their responsibilities on lake resource governance and conservation.
The Lake Victoria Day Forum was initiated because of the numerous problems it faced such as pollution, hyacinth invasion, disappearance of indigenous fish species, use of illegal fishing gears, poor fish handling and due to the fact that the lake is the single major resource in the area which also influences the lifestyles, culture and economic sustenance of the riparian communities in this region.

The inaugural post Lake Victoria Day Forum was held on 14th April 2000 at Dunga beach in Kisumu. The second was marked from 12th to 14th April 2001 at Koginga beach in Homabay. The third was held in Marenga beach in Port Victoria, Busia district while the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh forums were held in Muhuru Bay in Migori, Ringiti Island in Suba,Uhanya beach in Bondo districts and at Abwogo River Bank in Nyando district respectively. The eighth forum was commemorated on the neighborhood of River Nzoia at Sega Township in Siaya district while the ninth was held at Bala beach in Nyakach district.Last year’s forum was marked again at Marenga beach in Budalangi district and was themed “Community Action for the Restoration of Lake Victoria Basin.”

We Care Act launches "A Month For Making A Difference" April 22-May 22

We Care Act is proud to launch “a month for making a difference” that challenges our team leaders and others in our community to make a difference. Please see our website www.wecareact.org for more details about our organization. We would like to ask everyone to try to do something to help the community: either to help the earth to get greener (April 22 is Earth Day) such as clean a park, clean the road in front of your house, start a recycling program, or raise funds for disaster victims by organizing any event. We would like everyone to try and play your part in changing the world in the Global Youth Service Day.

We are conducting fundraising activities to help the victims from the most recent earthquakes in Qinghai, China and Haiti, and the 2008 earthquake victims in Sichuan, China who are still recovering.

We have designed and ordered bracelets/wristbands and propose to organize presentations, wristband sale booths, and/or other activities at different locations and dates throughout the month (please see the confirmed location and dates below).

Each wristband says We Care Act and also the word Love in both Chinese and French (Haitians speak French as well)

Each wristband cost $0.53 and are already paid for by us. Our team leaders can sell for prices varying from $1.00-2.00 each to raise funds for We Care Act. For our team leaders, please email (wca@wecareact.org) to let us know how many you would like us to send to you.

We invite youth to join our organization to become a team leader. To join, please go to our website (www.wecareact.org) or send an email (wca@wecareact.org).

And remember: we can change the world!
