City Year's GYSD and Comcast Cares Day
On April 24, City Year Washington, DC corps members, volunteers between the ages of 17 and 24, will lead community volunteers and City Year Heroes program participants in the execution of a powerful day of service at Ballou Senior High School in Southeast Washington, DC.
The City Year Heroes program is a 16-week middle school and high school weekend service-learning program. Starting in December, middle school students (Young Heroes) and high school students (City Heroes) come together to work in diverse teams to learn the value and importance of teamwork. Together they establish common ground and break down social barriers. In a city divided by lines of race and class, the Heroes seek to develop a truly diverse group of young people to work together to build a stronger community. Global Youth Service Day will be a perfect opportunity for them to realize their potential and the impact they can have as young leaders.
The hours served on this day will provide Ballou with a more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere, creating a healthier physical environment that make students feel welcome and comfortable when they come to learn. The gardens will give students something beautiful to look at and give those who manage it something to take pride in. The planter-benches will give students somewhere to relax and enjoy their improved outdoor space and the murals will inspire students with images of historical change-makers. The service itself will show the high school that there are citizens who are willing to help make a difference and a community that takes care of its neighbors.

Go Green by Going Blue - RECYCLE!!
We would like to start a recycling program at our facility. We would like to start this program on Youth Service Day. Our group will provide fun and interesting ways to recycle and games to help teach children why it is important to recycle. We believe that if the community and the YMCA had recycling containers, children and families would think twice about throwing away or littering trash.
