- What is Global Youth Service Day (GYSD)?
- Global Youth Service Day is:
- The largest service event in the world.
- The only day of service that focuses on the contributions of children and youth.
- When is GYSD?
- GYSD is held each year during a weekend in April. In 2010, GYSD is occur on April 23-25.
- How many youth participate?
- Millions of youth will participate in the 22nd annual GYSD. YSA supports many service projects by providing grants. In 2010, GYSD granted $750,000 to children and youth, schools, and organizations planning service and service-learning events leading up to GYSD.
- Who coordinates GYSD?
- Youth Service America coordinates GYSD each year in partnership with schools, organizations, corporations, elected officials, and young people around the world. For more information about YSA, visit www.YSA.org. State Farm Companies Foundation is the U.S. Presenting Sponsor.
- Why should I participate in GYSD?
- GYSD is a unique opportunity for youth around the world to address issues in their local, national, and international communities as part of a global movement. While helping communities, GYSD also provides leadership opportunities that benefit youth in school, in life, and for their future.
- How can I get involved?
- Plan a service project or join one in your community. Download the GYSD Planning Tool Kit to help you coordinate your project. Then visit www.GYSD.org/map to register your project or find one in your community.
- Are there any other resources?
- Yes. You can order or download – for free – the GYSD Poster, the Semester of Service Strategy Guide, or the Semester of Service Planning Calendar. You can also use GYSD logos and templates for press releases and public officials found on this website.
- May I translate resources into my own language?
- Yes! We want to make sure the materials are useful to everyone and encourage participants to translate them. Please send a copy of all materials you create to Mike Minks at mminks@ysa.org.
- Why is it called Global Youth Service Day when it lasts a whole weekend?
- The day of service, initially held on Friday, was extended to a whole weekend so that community and faith-based organizations, in addition to schools, have the opportunity to participate.
